Extended Diploma in Law

Introduction

The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Law is a 120-credit qualification regulated by Ofqual, equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate law degree in the UK. This diploma is ideal for students seeking to build foundational knowledge of the legal system, and when combined with the ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law, offers a pathway to an LLB top-up degree  the final year of a full law degree at a UK university.

Modules and credits hours

Students must complete all 10 mandatory units

Criminal Law (credits: 30)

This unit will equip learners with knowledge of the general foundations of criminal liability and with understanding of the major types of offences and their constituent elements.

Contract Law (credits:30)

This unit will equip learners with knowledge and understanding of the key principles of contract law, such as: validity of contract; terms of contract; vitiating elements that affect the validity of the contract; the ways in which the contract can come to an end and remedies for breach of contract available.

Legal Methods (credits: 30)

This unit will equip learners with the knowledge and understanding of the identification, interpretation and analysis of legal sources and materials. The acquired skills will enable the learner to apply the law to the facts of problems in any given legal area, to communicate clearly and persuasively and to reach satisfactory solutions to legal disputes

Public Law (credits: 30)

This unit will equip learners with knowledge of the general foundations of constitutional and administrative law, with a particular focus on the main elements of the United Kingdom’s constitution. The unit will enable learners to identify the significance of the separation of power and the sovereignty of Parliament, as well as the importance of human rights norms

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirements

– 2 A Levels and 5 GCSEs (Grade 4/C and above), or
– ATHE Level 3 Diploma in Law or equivalent Level 3 qualification, or
– Access to Higher Education Certificate, or
– International equivalent qualifications

English Language Requirement

–  IELTS 5.5 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR B2, CAE 162+, PTE Academic 42–49
